WILL PREGNANCY RUIN MY LIPOSUCTION RESULTS?

Will Pregnancy Ruin My Liposuction Results?

Liposuction is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures, especially among women. During liposuction, small amounts of stubborn fat are removed from parts of the body where it tends to collect. These areas include the patient’s abdomen, thighs, back, upper arms, and neck. One of the major benefits of liposuction is that once the fat is removed, it is gone forever. The patient’s body will continue to change over time, but the effects of the liposuction will remain intact.

We’ve found that women who are interested in abdominal liposuction often want to know if a future pregnancy will undo or ruin the effects of the procedure. As board-certified plastic surgeons, we can give you the facts about the impact of pregnancy on liposuction.

So, does pregnancy impact liposuction? The short answer is no. Pregnancy does not permanently alter the results of liposuction. If a woman has liposuction and then becomes pregnant, gains weight, gives birth, and finally loses the excess weight of pregnancy, her original liposuction improvements will return as they were before the pregnancy. Some patients have even told us that having liposuction helped them avoid gaining excess fat or as much fat as they had in previous pregnancies.

However, as we all know, a pregnant woman’s body undergoes many changes during the course of her pregnancy. And, each woman’s experience is different. You can still expect to gain weight while pregnant, even after liposuction. Gaining weight is a natural and healthy part of pregnancy. Your obstetrician can give you guidelines on healthy weight gain during each phase of your pregnancy.

Many women may choose to have liposuction on their abdomens after they are done having children. This often yields excellent results, as well, but it is important to know the limits of liposuction. Liposuction will remove fat, but will not remove excess skin or tighten skin around the abdomen. In fact, undergoing liposuction when you already have loose skin will only exacerbate the problem and lead to a “deflated” look.

If you are interested in taking care of the loose skin around your stomach, then you may be a suitable candidate for a tummy tuck, which tightens the skin. Or, you may want to consider an abdominoplasty, which removes excess skin altogether.

No two patients are the same. Everyone who walks through our doors has a unique background, body type, and medical history. That’s why we take the time to get to know each patient, their goals for surgery, and if they’ve been pregnant or plan to become pregnant in the future. Then, we can make recommendations that will get the patient the results they want as safely as possible.

The bottom line? Liposuction before or after pregnancy is a viable option. The best way to know for sure what works for YOU, is to schedule a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Fodero.
