IDEAL RHINOPLASTY CANDIDATES
There are several factors to consider if you are interested in rhinoplasty surgery. Rhinoplasty candidates should have a thorough understanding of rhinoplasty risks, rhinoplasty benefits, and the rhinoplasty recovery process, as well as a genuine desire to change their appearance, free of peer, parental, or societal pressure. Possessing strong will power, specific goals, and a comprehensive understanding of the procedure allows patients to have realistic expectations and the patience needed to make it through the recovery process. Undergoing rhinoplasty can have a tremendous impact on a person’s life, and it is important that individuals be mentally prepared for such a transformation.
Physically, rhinoplasty candidates should be in good overall health. It is important to note that children and young teenagers should not undergo rhinoplasty, as their bodies are still in development. That being said, young girls can consider rhinoplasty at roughly 14 or 15 years of age; young men should not consider rhinoplasty until roughly 18 years of age, as they develop at a slightly slower rate. Assuming good overall health and a mature, developed nose, anyone with a misshapen or damaged nose may be a rhinoplasty candidate. Individuals with asymmetrical noses, large noses, wide nostrils, bulbous nasal tips, and prominent ridges on the bridge of the nose can all benefit from rhinoplasty.

THE RHINOPLASTY PROCESS
PREPARING FOR THE CONSULTATION

Dr. Joseph Fodero offers consultations at his Florham Park, New Jersey office to discuss nose reshaping surgery, or rhinoplasty.
Before discussing the cost of rhinoplasty, it is important to understand that our practice treats each patient as an individual and that different factors may influence the actual price of the procedure. No two noses are alike, and rhinoplasty is customized according to the goals and needs of each patient. During rhinoplasty consultations, Dr. Fodero asks patients some basic questions and takes a short medical history. He listens to patients describe his or her expectations for nose reshaping surgery and answers any questions they might have about rhinoplasty. He then examines patients and informs them of all their available options before helping them decide on a course of action.
At this point, patients will discuss cost and payment options with our surgical coordinator. Patients leave our office with a greater knowledge of rhinoplasty and more of the tools required to make an informed decision about whether to proceed with surgery.
If you are considering scheduling a consultation with Dr. Fodero to discuss rhinoplasty, we suggest that you download and fill out the following forms prior to your consultation. This will help to expedite the process and save you time.
PREPARING FOR THE SURGERY
Dr. Fodero performs the vast majority of rhinoplasty procedures at Morristown Memorial and Morristown Ambulatory Care Center in Morristown, Overlook Hospital in Summit, Union County, and St. Barnabas Hospital in Essex County.
Once you have decided to undergo rhinoplasty, you will return to Dr. Fodero’s Florham Park office two weeks prior to your surgery. As part of your preparation for surgery, Dr. Fodero will take a detailed medical history and conduct a physical. In addition, you will sign consent forms and complete all necessary paperwork. The doctor will address any questions or concerns you may have about the surgery, and our surgical coordinator will personally prepare you by providing instructions on what to expect during and after the operation.
The majority of procedures are performed on an outpatient basis at Morristown Memorial. Patients return to the office six to eight days after the surgery for removal of sutures, splints, and cast. Most patients are able to return to most normal activities within ten days.

RHINOPLASTY RISKS – POTENTIAL COMPLICATIONS
With rhinoplasty, as with any surgery, there are a number of risks that a patient should be cognizant of, including the possibility of excessive bleeding, infection, blood clots, hematomas, and adverse reactions to anesthesia. Rhinoplasty risks specifically include:
- Localized numbness
- Nose bleeds during and after the recovery process
- Visible scarring at the base of the nose
- Excessive redness as a result of burst blood vessels beneath the skin
- Swelling
- Sensitivity
- Nerve damage
Though there are potential complications that can arise from rhinoplasty, with thorough preparation and a team of experienced practitioners, these risks can be greatly minimized. NOSE RESHAPING SURGERY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Many patients turn to Dr. Joseph Fodero because of his skill, experience, and record of success in performing rhinoplasty, and most have questions about the procedure, itself. Dr. Fodero is committed to answering each and every question comprehensively and honestly, as he believes that in-depth patient education is essential to exceptional patient care. Below, patients can find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about nose surgery. Contact our Florham Park rhinoplasty office, convenient to residents of both Essex County and Morris County, to learn the answers to your specific questions about nose reshaping surgery.
On average, our patients return to work in 10 days. Usually, after surgery on a Thursday, patients are able to report to work the following Monday..
During the consult, Dr. Fodero will analyze your nose, discuss your concerns and goals, and describe the changes he will be able to make through rhinoplasty. Dr. Fodero will discuss with patients exactly what he plans to do during nose surgery. In addition, Dr. Fodero utilizes state-of-the-art image morphing software so that patients can anticipate what the results of their nose surgery may look like.
While most of the major swelling and initial bruising will subside in 10 days, swelling can take a few weeks or months to completely resolve. Patients’ noses continue to improve subtly from months to years later.
Patients often see dramatic improvement in the following weeks to months following surgery, and the results continue to improve several months to years following surgery.
Even in Dr. Fodero’s hands, some rhinoplasties need to be revised. Dr. Fodero strives to give all of his patients a nose with which they are satisfied. If a patient is unsatisfied with the results Dr. Fodero achieved through primary rhinoplasty, and he believes that the results can be improved, he will waive the surgeon’s fee and perform secondary rhinoplasty.
Even though all cosmetic surgery patients encounter the risk of not being fully satisfied with their results, patients of Dr. Fodero are placing their trust in the hands of one of the most successful, respected, and experienced rhinoplasty surgeons in the country. Of the average rhinoplasty surgeon’s patients, about 25 percent will require revisional surgery; however, Dr. Fodero’s average is far below that at 5 percent, and approximately one-fifth of his work consists of revising other surgeons’ rhinoplasties. With Dr. Fodero, patients are entrusting their care to a surgeon who has more than 18 years of experience and has amassed thousands of satisfied patients.
As an alternative to the surgical procedure, Dr. Fodero also offers non-surgical rhinoplasty. This safe, convenient procedure utilizes hyaluronic acid such as Restylane® to contour and shape the nose according to the patient’s desires.
If a patient has a nasal airway obstruction related to a deviated septum, internal valve collapse, or large turbinates, insurance may pay for part of the nose surgery.

As an alternative our patients can also finance their procedure through CareCredit.
When scheduling a consultation with Dr. Fodero, be sure to give us your insurance information. Our staff has nearly 10 years of experience minimizing patients’ out-of-pocket expenses for rhinoplasty.
The nose surgery procedure is extremely safe. In 18 years of performing the surgery, Dr. Fodero has never had a major incident of bleeding during surgery or a major infection following it.
Though there are a number of factors involved in determining a patient’s candidacy for rhinoplasty, certain noses are easier to treat than others. The best candidates have realistic expectations for their results and possess nasal anatomy that is amenable to the procedure.
During the initial rhinoplasty consultation at his Florham Park cosmetic surgery office, Dr. Fodero will determine the patient’s candidacy and discuss the appropriate options.
