TRANSFORM YOUR SKIN: BENEFITS OF MICRONEEDLING

Are the Benefits of Microneedling Worth It?

Microneedling is a procedure that uses fine needles to create thousands of tiny, invisible puncture wounds in the skin. This stimulates the body to produce collagen and elastin, which are the key elements needed for youthful-looking skin. It may not sound very pleasant, but this non-invasive procedure is painless, safe, and incredibly effective as an anti-aging treatment. As experts in plastic surgery, we wanted to tell you about the many benefits of microneedling.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MICRONEEDLING?

Despite it being a simple, relatively low-tech procedure, microneedling has several key benefits.

  1. Reduces Wrinkles

Many doctors agree that microneedling is one of the most effective, non-surgical ways to reduce wrinkles and prevent new fine lines and wrinkles from forming in the first place. In addition, the results are very natural because the procedure relies on the body’s own natural healing mechanisms.

  1. Improves Acne Scars

Those who have moderate to even severe acne scarring may find that a few microneedling sessions can go a long way in reducing the visibility of their scars. And the benefits aren’t limited to the face. The procedure works just as well on back, chest, and neck scarring.

  1. Reverses Sun Damage

One of the benefits of microneedling that people often find surprising is its ability to reverse years of sun damage and restore a fresh and glowing appearance. Of course, microneedling is not a treatment for skin cancer. So, if you’ve spent too much time in the sun, be sure to talk to your doctor about a skin cancer screening.

  1. Tightens Loose Skin

The older you are, the less collagen you produce, and the looser your skin becomes. Microneedling can tighten and correct loose skin, which makes it great for older men and women.

  1. Shrinks Pores

One major benefit microneedling is that it stimulates collagen in and around your pores, which causes them to plump and appear shrunken, if not closed.

  1. Improves Absorption of Topical Treatments

Did you know that only a small percentage of that expensive serum you’re using on your face actually penetrates your skin? Studies confirm that microneedling can help creams, serums, and topical medications penetrate the skin more efficiently, so you get more of the benefit of the product.

  1. Reduces Stretch Marks

Microneedling is an effective treatment for reducing stretch marks along the legs, stomach, butt, and hips. As few as 4 sessions could make a difference in these problem areas.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING A MICRONEEDLING SESSION?

If you schedule a microneedling session, you’ll be instructed to stop all retinol products about 5 days before your treatment and refrain from using them again for another 5 days after treatment. Other than that, there’s no special preparations you need to make.

On the day of your treatment, you’ll need to arrive at least 30 minutes early so a numbing cream can be applied. The treatment itself can take 20 to 45 minutes depending on the area being treated. Picture a tool that looks like a tiny paint roller, only the roller portion is covered with tiny needles. A plastic surgeon, dermatologist, or aesthetician then gently rolls the tool over the area of the body needing treatment. After the treatment, you can expect red, dry, and/or tight skin for up to 48 hours.

Typically, results can be seen after the first treatment. However, in order to maximize results, 1 treatment a month for 3 to 5 months is recommended.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH MICRONEEDLING?

The benefits of microneedling far outweigh any risks. Patients may sometimes break out in a rash or develop contact dermatitis. But that is usually when the procedure is done at home or in a non-sterile environment. Be sure to have your treatment performed by a professional aesthetician or a board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist, and you can expect excellent results.
