The Evolution of Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery has been around for thousands of years. New procedures and technological advances are being made every day. Take a walk back in time with us and learn about the origins of our practice.

6000 to 3400 BC: People of Indian and Egyptian heritage experiment with nose shaping.

1700s: British doctors visiting India discover the foundation for the modern-day rhinoplasty.

1895: The first breast augmentation surgery is performed.

1910: Dr. Vilray Blair publishes techniques on skin grafting. He helped establish university and military training centers dedicated to plastic surgery during WWI.

1910: Dr. Hippolyte Morestin leads plastic surgery training during WWI.

1910: Plastic surgery increases in popularity when Dr. Varaztad Kazanjian creates many maxillofacial surgical techniques.

1924: Dr. John Davis, the first professor of plastic surgery in the US, creates the first formal training program in plastic surgery at Johns Hopkins.

1925: The first division of plastic surgery opens at a public hospital in NYC.

1930: Plastic surgeons are instrumental in the development of shatterproof car windshields.

1939: Dermatome is invented to treat early coverage of burns and wounds.

1940: Facial trauma centers are created during WWII.

1940: Dr. Sterling Bunnell masters hand surgery and includes it as a part of plastic surgery.

1950: Dr. Ralph Millard utilizes new techniques for correcting cleft lips.

1950: Plastic surgery is officially integrated into the medical establishment.

1954: Dr. Joseph Murray performs the first organ transplant.

1962: Dr. Thomas Cronin announces the first silicone breast implant.

1970: Dr. Joseph Jurkiewicz innovates a new technique that combines skin/muscle flaps.

1982: Dr. Carl Hartrampf develops the TRAM flap technique that is used in reconstructive breast surgery.

1982: Liposuction is introduced to the United States.

1988: Dr. Susan McKinnon does the first nerve allograft, which brings improved motor function to people who have experienced nerve trauma.

2000: Endoscope is used to reduce scarring and recovery time.

2005: First partial face transplant in France.

2010: First full face transplant in Spain.

2017: A plastic surgery research group in Japan develops an augmented reality system that allows them to create 3D simulations of desired facial reconstructive results and projects the renderings over the patient’s face in surgery.
