Breast Lift Versus Breast Augmentation

If you’re dissatisfied with the way your breasts look, you’re not alone. Whether you wish nature had blessed you with a larger bosom or feel dissatisfied with how your breasts look after life events, like pregnancy or menopause, it’s common for women to wish their breasts looked different.

Our skilled board-certified plastic surgeon at Northeastern Plastic Surgery in Florham Park, New Jersey, Joseph Fodero, MD, PA, offers two procedures, breast lift and breast augmentation, which can give your breasts an improved appearance. Learn the difference between these two breast surgeries, and which to choose to get the breasts you desire.

What is a breast lift?

Getting a breast lift restores drooping or sagging breasts and gives them a perkier and more lifted appearance. If aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or losing weight has made your breasts saggy, a breast lift will give them a more youthful, perkier, and lifted appearance.

To lift your breasts, Dr. Fodero performs a surgical procedure where he raises your breast tissue and nipples, then tightens any excess skin on your breasts. Your breasts have an improved appearance almost immediately after surgery, with full benefits being apparent within two weeks.

What is a breast augmentation?

A breast augmentation gives you larger breasts, improves symmetry if your breasts are sized or shaped differently from each other, and restores any volume you’ve lost in your breasts. To give your breasts a natural, enlarged appearance, Dr. Fodero uses high-quality silicone or saline implants.

In the surgery, Dr. Fodero carefully inserts the chosen implant on top or under your chest muscle. Your breasts take about six months to fully recover from the surgery, but you’ll still notice their increased size right after surgery.

Which procedure should I choose?

Breast lift and breast augmentation procedures both improve your breasts, but they have different results. A breast lift focuses on reversing gravity causing your breasts to stop sagging, while a breast augmentation increases the size of your breasts.

You’re an excellent candidate for a breast lift if you want your breasts to have a higher, more lifted appearance but are not interested in increasing your breast size. You’re a great candidate for breast augmentation if you’d like to augment the size or shape or your breasts but do not want your breasts to be perkier.

If you’re interested in giving your breasts a fuller as well as a perkier appearance, Dr. Fodero offers a combined breast augmentation with a breast lift procedure. During this surgery, Dr. Fodero begins by inserting the implant below your pectoral muscles, then performs a breast lift. You end up with the best of both worlds by fully enhancing the size and perkiness of your breasts.

If you’re not certain which breast surgery is right for you, Dr. Fodero can make a recommendation after your initial consultation. During this time, he will examine you and listen to your goals and desires from breast surgery. You can also view before and after photos from Dr. Fodero’s different breast surgeries to get an idea of how your breasts would look after each procedure.
