If you are among the many women who desire a firmer, fuller, more voluptuous rear end, then a Brazilian butt lift might be the procedure for you. Also known as a gluteoplasty, the Brazilian butt lift involves removing fat from one area of the body and transferring it to the butt—making it ideal for women who want to slim down other areas of their body as well as add volume to their backside.

As experts in Brazilian butt lifts, we know that this technical procedure is best performed by a skilled surgeon who has had lots of experience and success with the procedure. That’s why we wanted to share with you this list of questions to ask your potential plastic surgeon during your consultation:

  1. Are you board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS)?

This is the first question you should ask any plastic surgeon. A board-certified plastic surgeon is one who has:

Many surgeons may claim to be board-certified in other medical specialties, but being board-certified in plastic surgery is the gold standard.

  1. How many Brazilian butt lifts have you performed?

Your surgeon should have at least 15 to 20 successful butt lifts under his or her belt. Ask to see before and after pictures. Look for a range of body types in the pictures, which will be good indicator that the surgeon doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all approach.

  1. How do you perform the procedure?

No two surgeons will explain the procedure in the exact same way, but the explanation should contain a description of the three main parts of the surgery:

  1. Fat removal: Fat is removed via liposuction or needle and syringe. The fat harvest should be performed slowly and methodically to ensure the fat cells aren’t damaged and the harvest area remains smooth post extraction.
  2. Fat processing: The fat is centrifuged at low speeds to remove blood, oil, and water, and maintain the integrity of the fat cells.
  1. How long will the surgery take?

A typical Brazilian butt lift will take five to eight hours because each of the steps must be performed slowly and meticulously to ensure proper results. If your surgeon tells you that the surgery will take four hours or less, then that’s a sign that the surgeon may cut corners. Any shortcuts will result in poor surgical outcomes.

  1. What’s the best possible outcome for me?

Your surgeon should discuss the shape and size of your butt as part of your entire appearance. You simply don’t want a bigger butt, but one that looks firm, attractive, and in proportion with the rest of your body. Be sure to also discuss a desirable waist to hip ratio, which is an important measurement to produce natural looking results.

  1. How many of your patients have needed a revision or a touch-up?

This is a key question because if a Brazilian butt lift is done correctly, there should be a very low number of patients who return for touch-ups. If the surgeon describes touch-ups and revisions as inevitable, or mentions a large number of returning patients, then you should find a different surgeon. When you do find a surgeon you like, make sure you understand their revision policy and the costs involved.
