HITTING THE BEACH AFTER BREAST AUGMENTATION

What to Expect During Your Post Breast Augmentation Summer

Have you recently had breast augmentation surgery? If so, then you’re probably excited to hit the beach to show off your new curves. At Northeastern Plastic Surgery, we’re breast augmentation experts and wanted to give you these tips to help ensure your breasts stay healthy and attractive while you’re enjoying the surf and sand.

PROTECT INCISIONS FROM THE SUN

Spending time on the beach means you’ll be exposed to the sun. Sunscreen is always recommended for everyone, whether you’ve had breast augmentation surgery or not. But if you are recovering from surgery, special care should be taken to protect your incision areas and reduce plastic surgery scars.

Your scars may be red and raised for a few weeks after surgery. During that time, be sure not to expose them to direct sunlight. Doing so may cause them to darken and become more prominent. Use clothing to cover up the areas you need to protect and/or sit under an umbrella while at the beach.

Once the scars have become softer and less red they can be exposed to indirect sunlight for limited amounts of time. It’s also a good idea to apply sunscreen directly over the scars for added protection.

STAY DRY

If you love spending time in the water, whether it’s the ocean or a pool, you’ll need to wait about 4 weeks before you can take the plunge. Some patients may feel fantastic sooner than that, but it’s important to avoid the temptation to get into the water. Your skin needs time to heal and become completely water resistant. If you’re looking to cool off, then ask your doctor if it’s okay for you to sit with your feet in the water or to wade in up to your waist.

EXERCISE WITH CAUTION

As a general rule, you can get back to light exercising about 2 to 3 weeks after a breast augmentation procedure. The recommended exercises during that time are low impact and focus on the chest and abdominal muscles. In general, any exercises you do during this time should be gentle and not strenuous. Also, be sure to avoid exercises that involve raising your arms over your head for at least 2 weeks.

If you’re looking to get back to typical beach sports like volleyball, frisbee, or running along surf, then it’s best to wait 6 to 8 weeks after surgery. Again, ask your doctor for specific timelines and acceptable activities.

As you do start to exercise more vigorously, wear an elastic and comfortable sports bra for added support. Avoid underwire bras for at least 6 weeks. And remember, you have additional volume on your chest so make sure you’re aware of your balance when you start exercising again.

BE BEACH READY AND BE SAFE

Your breast augmentation procedure has given you the curves you’re looking for. Follow the tips above to help ensure a safe recovery, and your new beach body will be beach ready in no time.
