Q: What’s more important when considering breast augmentation surgery: breast shape or breast size?
A: At Northeastern, we believe that breast shape is the most important feature to consider. Our main goal is to produce shapely, natural-looking breasts that are in proportion to a women’s body. Also, keep in mind that bigger is not always better. The larger the implant is, the more obvious it may be that you’ve had work done. Also, if your breasts are too large, they may interfere with exercise and stretch out existing tissue over time.
What’s the difference between silicone implants and saline implants?
A: Silicone implants, FDA approved since 2006, are made of silicone gel encased in a silicone rubber shell. These implants have been safely used in Europe for years and provide exceptionally natural results. Saline implantsare filled with a benign saltwater solution and can be implanted through smaller incisions. Overall, saline implants are extremely safe and have a realistic look and feel, as well. The type of implant you choose is a decision you and your surgeon will make together.
Q: Should I have my implants placed under or over the muscle?
A: There are several factors that go into making this decision, but here’s the short answer: Go with under the muscle placement if you are choosing saline implants, have a small amount of natural breast tissue, or are aware of a strong family history of breast cancer. Choose over the muscle placement if you want silicone implants, have a large amount of natural tissue, or you are having a breast lift in addition to breast enlargement surgery.
Q: What is fat transfer?
A: Fat transfer is a breast augmentation procedure that doesn’t require either a silicone or saline implant. During the fat transfer procedure, your surgeon will make small incisions to harvest fat from certain areas of your body—usually the thighs, hips, or stomach. Then the fat is carefully reinjected into your breasts.
Q: How long will it take me to recover from my breast augmentation surgery?
A: The experience of recovering from breast augmentation surgery will vary from woman to woman depending on her age, health status, type of implant, and other factors. But you can expect your recovery to take at least six weeks before the final result will be realized. After week six, you can exercise without restraint, sleep in any position, and wear the bra of your choice. If you’re concerned about being completely healed in time for swimsuit season, then you’ll want to schedule your breast enhancement surgery in the Spring.
Q: What is a breast lift?
A: A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, is a procedure in which the breasts are literally moved to a higher position on a women’s chest. There are no implants involved. A breast lift can make a woman’s breasts look more youthful, perkier, and in some cases, larger, but does not actually increase the size of the breasts.
Q: How much does breast augmentation surgery cost?
A: Breast augmentation surgery costs vary across the country, but in New Jersey, the average cost is $7,000 to $10,000. Know that there are financing options available to help you better manage the costs.
