ARE YOU A CANDIDATE FOR BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY?

Are You a Candidate for Breast Reduction Surgery?

Women with overly developed breasts may experience a number of undesirable health conditions including poor posture; skin ulcers; and consistent pain in the back, neck, and shoulders. In addition, oversized breasts can interfere with sleep and exercise. Apart from these physical issues, women with overly large breasts may also face insecurities about their appearance.

If you struggle with the size of your breasts, you are not alone. Every year thousands of women seek treatment and successfully undergo reduction mammoplasty, more commonly referred to as breast reduction surgery.

As a plastic surgery office specializing in breast surgery, we wanted to provide information to help you determine if you are a good candidate for breast reduction surgery.

Why should I consider breast reduction surgery?

You may want to consider breast reduction surgery if you have or experience:

If you regularly experience one or more of these symptoms, then breast reduction surgery may bring relief.

Am I a good candidate for breast reduction surgery?

Although you may experience the symptoms described above, there are other factors to consider. This surgery is recommended for non-smokers who are in generally good physical health, have no active medical conditions, and are at or near a healthy weight. If you are overweight, then you doctor will most likely recommend that you lose weight before having surgery to see if that helps reduce your breast size. Also, your skin should have appropriate elasticity so that it will regain tightness post-surgery.

Good candidates for breast reduction must also be mentally and emotionally prepared to go through the recovery process. You will need to allow yourself time to heal, which will mean missing work, family life, and other obligations for at least a week, but possibly longer.

Finally, you must have realistic expectations of the outcome of your surgery. Be sure to have a candid discussion with your plastic surgeon so you understand what you can expect your breasts to look like post-surgery.

Who isn’t a good candidate for breast surgery?

Breast reduction surgery may not be right for you if you have any of the following:

Breast surgery is also not right for you if you are severely obese, are a smoker, or are currently breastfeeding (or have recently stopped).

Ultimately, a full examination by a qualified plastic surgeon can help you determine if breast reduction surgery is an option for you.

What happens during breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery will take about two to five hours. During the surgery, your surgeon will make a cut around your nipple, then downward on the breast. The operating team will remove the appropriate amount of fat, glandular tissue, and skin from your breasts and reposition your nipple. Your incisions will be stitched and your breasts will be wrapped in gauze.

What are the benefits of breast reduction surgery?

After a breast reduction surgery, your breasts will be in correct proportion to your body size. You’ll find relief from the embarrassment, pain, and discomfort of having too large breasts. You’ll likely sleep better and have the ability to participate in a wider range of physical activities. In addition, a breast reduction can enhance the shape and appearance of your breasts and greatly improve the comfort and fit of your clothing.
