Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a condition where men have heavy, female-like breasts. DR. JOSEPH FODERO: Gynecomastia is a condition when men have heavy, female-like breasts. And it can be very concerning to them. A lot of men won’t want to take their shirt off at the beach; they won’t want to go to the gym, because they’re just self-conscious about how they look. So gynecomastia resection involves removing that tissue, and giving them a more normal guy’s chest. Gynecomastia is a condition that we see quite often here at Northeastern Plastic Surgery. It is a very, very common problem among men, and you see it in very fit men that are in the gym and have a low body fat percentage and are in really good shape, and then you see it in some men and boys that are slightly weight. And all of these men can potentially have correction with gynecomastia surgery. The procedure itself it typically takes about an hour and a half to two and a half hours to do and involves some liposuction or some removal of the breast gland itself, and that is often enough to restore the chest to a more normal appearance. The recovery is rather quick, and usually involves about four or five days out of school or work. Men typically understate how much a condition bothers them. So if a man comes to me with gynecomastia, it really bothers him. So when that’s corrected, and now they have a normal appearing chest, they’re really happy. And you can see the things that they wouldn’t do before, they’re willing to do. They wouldn’t take their shirt off at the beach, now they’ll take their shirt off at the beach. They didn’t want to go to the gym and be in the locker room, now that doesn’t bother them anymore. So the impact on a man’s life is profound.
