DR. JOSEPH FODERO: Breast reduction surgery is a procedure designed to alleviate the burden of having large breasts. Typically women that come into my office for breast reduction surgery complain of symptoms such as back pain, shoulder grooving from the bras, chafing or rashes underneath the breasts. They’re also just very self-conscious about having large breasts. Often women that are large-breasted will have limitations on what they can do. They’ll have limitations in exercise. They won’t be able to wear certain clothes because of their chest size. It’s hard to find clothes when you’re disproportionate from large breasts. So what breast reduction does is it resets the breast. It gives them an appropriately sized breast. The goal of contemporary breast reduction is not just to make the breasts smaller; it’s to make the breasts smaller and prettier. Breast reduction surgery in my practice is one of the most satisfying procedures that we do, because people are so happy afterwards. It’s not uncommon for a woman to come back after she’s had a breast reduction and tell me “everyone asks did I lose weight”. The benefits to patients after a breast reduction are numerous. Women now can buy the clothes that they want to buy. They can be more active, whether it’s in the gym or with sports. They will feel the physical benefits of less back pain, no more shoulder grooving, no more rashes. And these are things that tend to get worse over time. So in the practice we see very young women that seek out breast reduction, and then there are older women that have really struggled with the burden of large breasts, and those women can often be the most happy patients, because it’s never too late to have a breast reduction. Breast reduction surgery typically takes three hours to perform. It’s an outpatient procedure that we perform right here at our surgery center, and the recovery usually involves a week off of school or work.
