DR. JOSEPH FODERO: Surgical treatment of the aging face involves a group of operations designed to do just that, to restore the youth of the face. And they involve procedures such as forehead lifting, eyelid surgery, and a face and neck lift. And the goal of surgical facial rejuvenation is to create a youthful, natural-appearing face. What we want to do is we want to combine these operations in a subtle but powerful way to restore the face to its previous state.
If someone has a descent of their eyebrow, you can raise the brow and put it in a more natural, youthful position. If there is redundancy of the eyelid skin, that can be removed and the eyes can be opened up to give a more rested appearance. For people that have had changes in their cheeks or jaw-line or are seeing jowls or just loose skin on their neck, a facelift, which involves a restoration of the cheek and neck, may be the solution.
The goal of contemporary facial rejuvenation is to restore youth, is to take the fatigue out of someone’s face. The goal is not to make people look strange or to make them look like they had plastic surgery, the goal is to make them look the way they used to look before. One of the things that I like to do in my practice is I like to see pictures of the way they looked when they were younger. The goal isn’t to make them look different; the goal is to make them look younger and rested. If facial aging surgery is performed correctly, you have natural, youthful-appearing faces coming back to your office postoperatively, and people can be quite happy with the improvement in their look and the way people treat them.
