DR. JOSEPH FODERO: Abdominoplasty is an operation designed to give you a flatter stomach. It’s a procedure designed to give someone improvement in their stomach that they can’t get with diet and exercise alone. There are times when there have been changes in the stomach, either from significant weight loss or from pregnancy, and you just can’t get the stomach back to the way you want it to be. So an abdominoplasty will provide that improvement by removing that extra skin and tightening up the muscles that have become lax. The procedure itself typically takes two to three hours to perform. The majority of them are performed on an inpatient basis, although there are some candidates for outpatient surgery, and the recovery typically involves one to two weeks out of school or work. I typically tell my patients that you’re going to have one day in the hospital, you’re going to have a few days of being home where you need someone to help you get around, you’re going to have about a week off of work or school and you can’t drive, and you’re going to have another week where you lay low but you’re able to drive and do some light things around the house. The abdominoplasty is an immensely powerful operation, and what it does is it gives you a stomach that you just simply can’t get on your own. In on setting, in the O.R., I can give you that stomach that you had in youth, or maybe that you never had.
