Incision Locations
As the placement of breast implants is an invasive procedure, we utilize anesthesia for the health and comfort of the patient. There are several different incision locations which can be used for breast augmentation surgery:
- Inframammary – An inframammary incision is made in the crease of the breast, or under the breast’s natural fold. This technique is often utilized with silicone breast implants, as it provides superior access to the chest wall muscle. Though this technique provides Dr. Fodero with the ability to easily place the implant, there is greater potential for visible scarring when compared to other techniques.
- Transaxillary – The transaxillary approach can be used when placing saline breast implants, as saline implants can be filled after placement (unlike silicone implants, which are pre-filled). Because saline implants require smaller incisions, the transaxillary incision is made in the armpit, resulting in scarless breast tissue. The implant is then guided into place and filled with a safe saline solution.
- Trans-umbilical – As with the transaxillary approach, the trans-umbilical incision can be used to place saline breast implants, which are then filled once in place. This approach leaves little or no visible scarring, as the incision is placed in the naval. Once the incision has been made, the implants are guided into place up the abdomen with the use of an endoscope, or small camera.
- Periareolar – A placement option for both silicone and saline breast implants, the periareolar incision is made on the outside of the areola. This incision location results in little or no scarring, making it a popular choice for women seeking breast augmentation surgery. At our New Jersey practice, we are proponents of the periareolar technique because of its usability and positive results.
At Northeastern Plastic Surgery, we will discuss your goals with you in great detail and advise you of your options. Your satisfaction is our number one priority, and we will devise a treatment plan that works for you.
Implant Placement Locations
There are two methods for breast implant placement:
- Subglandular Breast Implant Placement – This implant placement option involves placing the implant between the pectoral muscle and the mammary gland of the breast. Because the pectoral muscle does not have to be manipulated for placement, recovery time and post-operative pain are both minimized. However, some feel this placement option results in a less natural appearance.
- Submuscular Breast Implant Placement – With this technique, the implant is placed behind the muscle wall. Because there is an additional layer of tissue between the implant and the exterior surface of the breast, the implant both appears and feels more natural. Though recovery time and post-operative discomfort are typically greater with this technique, many patients prefer it because of the results that are possible.
