Liposuction - Frequently Asked Questions
Liposuction is one way for people to help sculpt their figures and looks slimmer and more fit when diet and exercise fail. Below are some of the most common questions people have about this form of body sculpting surgery.
Can the fat comeback? Are the results permanent?
According to current scientific thinking, following puberty, the number of fat cells in our bodies will remain constant. Weight gain and weight loss make these cells larger or smaller but do not add to them. When these cells are removed via liposuction, they will not regenerate. So, your new shape should hold up for the rest of your life.
What happens if I gain weight later?
Even if a large liposuction permanently removes fat cells from your body, the remaining fat cells are still capable of taking up extra calories. Liposuction does not replace dieting and exercise.
Maintaining weight after a liposuction procedure is not any easier than before, but the difference is that you will show the weight in areas from which fat cells were not removed. If you gain weight you will maintain the shape of your new body, but you can easily become a larger version of this new shape.
Will pregnancy erase the effects if liposuction?
Many young women who have not had children would like to get liposuction but worry that pregnancy will void the results they get from the surgery. In general, this is not the case. While pregnancy changes the shape of a woman, after the baby is born the body returns to its former shape and the benefits of liposuction return.
How old is too old to have liposuction?
Potential candidates for liposuction must be evaluated individually. The best candidates are those with firm skin that retracts easily and bulges of fat that can be easily suctioned away. Candidates with loose skin may require multiple procedures to improve the appearance of the skin without adverse affects such as dimpling.
